Why Do We Need to Stay Hydrated?

  • To maintain body temperature

  • To protect tissue, spinal cord, and joints

  • To help the body breakdown foods and vitamins

  • Hydration helps with weight loss

  • Hydration helps with constipation, kidney stones, and UTI’s

Where should I get my water intake from?

We get about 20% of our required water from the foods we eat. The rest we have to get from drinking water. Try to avoid drinking distilled water. It will leach minerals from your body.

How much water should I drink?

A good rule of thumb for how much water to drink daily is to take your body weight and divide it by 2. That’s how many ounces a day you should drink.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggests:

  • about 15.5 cups of water (125 ounces) each day for men

  • about 11.5 cups (91 ounces) daily for women

You’ll have to increase your water intake if you’re exercising or living in a hotter region to avoid dehydration. Don’t forget to talk to your doctor about your daily water intake.
